The Dream of Gerontius is widely regarded as Elgar's finest choral work. An oratorio in two parts 'Gerontius' (a name derived from the Greek word geron, "old man") was composed by Elgar in 1900 for the Birmingham Music Festival of 1900. Using much of a poem by Cardinal Newman this magnificent piece relays the journey of a pious man's soul from his deathbed to his judgment before God and settling into Purgatory.
