Biographical and professional information about mezzo-soprano Catherine Carby.

Catherine Carby studied at the Canberra School of Music and the Royal College of Music.

Catherine was a finalist in several major competitions including the Kathleen Ferrier Award, the Richard Tauber Award and the Young Concert Artists Trust. Other roles have included Romeo I Capuleti e i Montecchi for Chelsea Opera Group, Aurelio L’Assiedo di Calais for English Touring Opera, Vitige Flavio and the title role in Muzio Scaevola at the London Handel Festival, Don Ramiro La finta giardiniera at the Buxton Festival, Soeur Mathilde Dialogues des Carmélites, Second Maid Elektra and Voice from Above Die Frau ohne Schatten for the Royal Opera, London, Kate Pinkerton Madam Butterfly for English National Opera, Octavian Der Rosenkavalier for Scottish Opera and Brangäne Tristan und Isolde for Longborough Festival Opera.

Her concert engagements have included the CPE Bach Magnificat with the Brighton Philharmonic Orchestra, Beethoven Symphony No. 9 with the Philharmonia, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and the Ulster OrchestraSea Pictures with the Melbourne and Queensland Symphony OrchestrasMessiah for the Sydney Philharmonia Choirs and at the Three Choirs Festival, Haydn Arianna auf Naxos with the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra and Missa in tempore Belli with the Tasmanian Symphony OrchestraDas Lied von der Erde with the Gardner Chamber Orchestra in Boston, Mozart Mass in C for the Polski Chór Kameralny, Mozart Requiem with the Sydney Philharmonia, Der Rosenkavalier with the West Australian Symphony Orchestra, Taverner Supernatural Songs with the City of London Sinfonia, a Verdi Gala for the Hallé Orchestra under Sir Mark Elder and and an Opera Gala with the Royal Northern Sinfonia. Roles for Opera Australia include Carmen (title role), Octavian (Der Rosenkavalier), Suzuki (Madame Butterfly), Smeraldina (The Love for Three Oranges), Giovanna/Maddalena (Rigoletto), Donna Elvira (Don Giovanni),  Auntie (Peter Grimes), Baba the Turk (The Rake's Progress), Hippolyta (A Midsummer Night's Dream), Kristina (The Makropoulos Secret). For West Australian Opera, Catherine has sung Muse/Nicklausse (Les Contes d'Hoffmann).

Her recordings and broadcasts include Satanella for Naxos, Messiah for the BBC, The Love for Three Oranges for Chandos, Der Rosenkavalier for Opera Australia CD / DVD and Classic 100 Opera for ABC.

Highlights of 2015 / 2016 included Rodrigo Pia de’Tolomei and the title role in Iphigénie en Tauride for English Touring Opera, Haydn Paukenmesse with the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment and Elijah at the Hexham Festival.

Current engagements include Diana La Calisto for English Touring Opera, Nita The Mountebanks with the BBC Concert Orchestra, Spirit of Antonia’s Mother Les Contes d’Hoffmann for the Royal Opera, London, Brangäne Tristan und Isolde at the Teatro Sao Carlos, Lisbon, and Katharina Schratt Mayerling for the Royal Ballet, London.
